Meet Dawn Grace-Jones

An educator, consultant, and author dedicated to defending those who heal others

Hello, I’m Dawn!

I teach nurses and other medical professionals how to effectively implement and utilize EHR systems to reduce legal liabilities and avoid litigation through speaking, writing, and consulting.

As a lawyer and nurse with over 20 years of experience, I understand the desire to effectively utilize the electronic health record and deliver the kind of quality care patients deserve.

Let me help take the confusion and uncertainty out of using the EHR in your medical practice so that you can focus on what you do best, healing.

Dawn has been a passionate advocate for people in need motivated by the desire to help others for over 30 years. After graduating with her BSN from Florida Agricultural & Mechanical University, she became an ICU nurse at what is now known as Jackson Health System.

Soon after, her love of learning and determination to do more to help others led to earning her JD from the University of Miami while simultaneously working as an emergency room nurse and taking care of her growing family.

After becoming a member of the Florida Bar Association in 1991, she became an assistant city attorney where she litigated workers compensation cases. She listened to city workers regarding injuries and helped the city enter fair settlement where appropriate.  As an attorney, her understanding of health and injury was vital in the ability to help the government with guaranteeing fairness to employees.

She then achieved designations as a special magistrate for Miami-Dade and Broward counties and as a Better Business Bureau certified arbitrator. But she never lost her love for medicine and helping those who practice it, saying that being medically useful gave her career more meaning.

There are no magical answers. It takes real work and team work to make the system the best that it can be for everyone.

Throughout her career she has worked as a legal consultant helping to discover mistakes and deviations from standards within medical records. Such as instances where healthcare professionals rewrote notes and removed old pages, so that information could be changed, but either forgot to remove the old page or inserted the new information incorrectly.

Now her goal is to ensure that all healthcare professionals consider the wonderful opportunity they have in working within the Electronic Health Record and recognize that it is a system that is progressive and useful, yet still evolving. As she says:

“We all have a part in making our work environment the best that it can be… There are no magical answers. It takes real work and teamwork to make the system the best that it can be for everyone.”

The information she shares through her lectures, speeches, and book aim to help all understand that the EHR system is meant to help with clinical decision support systems, computerized order entry and health information exchange.

The goal is to ensure that documentation is done properly so that healthcare professionals can utilize EHR systems effectively, reduce their possible liabilities, and avoid litigation.

As a speaker, writer and consultant, she helps educate on avoiding the litigation process with showing how mistakes happen and what can be done to avoid them. The lecture shows what attorneys are considering and how the legal system approaches the medical professional/system.

She is a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, the Nu Chapter of Chi Eta Phi Sorority, Incorporated, and the Miami-Dade County chapter of The Charmettes, Incorporated, an organization dedicated to researching and eradicating cancer.

She is a member of the nursing sorority, Nu Chapter of Chi Eta Phi Incorporated, the Charmettes Incorporated, Miami-Dade Chapter and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated. All of which give her opportunities to divulge her skills and abilities as both a nurse and attorney to her peers and the community. These organizations all strive on community service including cancer education, research and eradication and uplifting the environment through various measures.

When she’s not traveling to universities, hospitals, and organizations throughout the US, she is a practicing attorney and hearing officer. She can be found listening to piano music and spending time with her husband and three children.
